Luxury travel operators find high-net-worth clients through people who already travel at their price: past guests, their referrals and specialist travel advisors, then press and high-intent search. They qualify by past nightly spend, not stated wealth. Score each enquiry out of 15 on five questions and put anything scoring 12 or more in front of a senior consultant within the hour.
- Wealth is not the filter: Capgemini’s World Wealth Report 2026 counts 25.3 million high-net-worth individuals worldwide at the end of 2025. A wealth label does not tell you who will spend your nightly rate; past travel spend does.
- The question that does the work: “What did you spend per night on the last trip you loved?” Compare the answer with your own rate.
- The scoring table: five criteria, 0–3 points each, with routing thresholds at 12, 8 and 4 points.
- The cheapest source: past guests and old enquiries, because the acquisition cost is already spent.
- Day one: score your last 50 won and lost enquiries against the table before you change any marketing.
Why “high net worth” is the wrong filter for luxury travel clients
A high-net-worth travel client, for a luxury operator, is someone whose past travel spend per night is close to your own rate, whatever their balance sheet says. Capgemini’s World Wealth Report 2026 puts the global HNWI population at 25.3 million at the end of 2025, up 7.9% in a year. There are far too many wealthy people to target as a group, and many of them never spend at luxury-tour prices.
Price sets the boundary instead. Aventur Marketing, a tourism agency, writes that luxury tours “generally start at about $1000/day, not including airfare”, a practitioner’s estimate rather than a survey. Whatever your own rate is, it is the number to qualify against. Someone who last spent a third of it per night is a long nurture, not a hot lead, however impressive their job title.
How it works
From luxury travel enquiry to booked consultation
Ask the nightly-rate question
Ask what they spent per night on the last trip they loved. Compare it with your own rate.
Score out of 15
Score spend, travel window, decision-maker, source and prior specialist travel from 0 to 3 each.
Route by threshold
Twelve or more goes to a senior consultant within the hour. Lower scores get a same-day call, a sample itinerary or self-serve information.
Book the itinerary consultation
The first call confirms the score and books the full consultation with the person who decides.

Where do high-net-worth travel clients come from?
Ranked by how cheaply each source produces a held consultation, in our experience of high-ticket selling rather than by any published survey:
- Past guests. They have already paid your rate once. The only cost is the call.
- Referrals from past guests. A referral usually comes from someone who knows what your trip costs, so it often arrives pre-qualified on nightly spend.
- Specialist travel advisors and consortia. The advisor has already qualified the client and expects commission; your job is to be easy to sell.
- Press and editorial. Coverage in the titles your guests read builds the trust a five- or six-figure trip needs. It produces enquiries slowly and unevenly.
- High-intent paid search and LinkedIn. Qualified Leads, an agency, says paid search can produce first high-net-worth enquiries within 30 days but that a scaled engine takes 6–12 months (its claim). Expect the widest spread of nightly spend from this source, which is why scoring matters most here.
The pattern across all five: the closer a source is to someone who has already paid your price, the less qualifying it needs.

The nightly-rate qualification questions
These six questions qualify a luxury travel enquiry on behaviour rather than claimed budget. Ask them on the enquiry form where you can and on the first call where you cannot. People answer “what did you spend” far more honestly than “what is your budget”, because it is a memory rather than a negotiation.
| # | Question | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | What did you spend per night, per room, on the last trip you loved? | Real spend versus your rate. The single strongest signal. |
| 2 | When do you want to travel, and how fixed are the dates? | Whether a deposit is likely this season or next year. |
| 3 | Who is travelling, and who else decides? | Party size (so trip value) and whether the decision-maker is in the conversation. |
| 4 | How did you hear about us? | Source, which predicts fit (see the ranked list above). |
| 5 | Have you travelled with a specialist or private operator before? | Whether they already accept specialist pricing and lead times. |
| 6 | What would make this trip a disappointment? | Not scored. It gives the consultant the brief for the call. |
How do I score a luxury travel enquiry? The 15-point enquiry score
The 15-point enquiry score turns questions 1–5 into a routing decision: each scores 0–3, and the total decides who calls and how fast. The bands and weights are our decision rule, not a benchmark. Calibrate them on your own history before you trust them.
| Criterion | 3 points | 2 points | 1 point | 0 points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Past nightly spend as a share of your rate | 100% or more | 60–99% | 30–59% | Under 30% or no answer |
| Travel window | Dates set, 4–12 months out | Dates set, under 4 months | More than 12 months out | No dates |
| Decision-maker | Traveller who decides is in the conversation | Assistant or advisor with a brief | Partner deciding, not present | Researching with no mandate |
| Source | Past guest or guest referral | Advisor or press | Paid search or social | Competition, directory, unknown |
| Prior specialist travel | Specialist or private operator at a similar price | Luxury hotels, self-arranged | Packages or large-ship cruises | None stated |
Routing thresholds: 12–15 points, a senior consultant or the founder calls within the hour. 8–11, a consultant calls the same business day. 4–7, send a sample itinerary and re-contact in 30 days. 0–3, a polite reply and self-serve information.
Worked example (illustrative): a safari operator charging USD 1,800 per person per night. Enquiry A is a couple who last stayed at a USD 1,500 lodge (83% of the rate, 2 points), with dates seven months out (3), both on the call (3), referred by a past guest (3), who have travelled with a specialist before (3): 14 points, senior call within the hour. Enquiry B came from paid search, last spent USD 400 a night at a resort (22%, 0), has no dates (0), is researching for a partner who is not present (1), source paid search (1), and has only taken packages (1): 3 points, self-serve information.
Calibrate it on day one: score your last 50 enquiries, won and lost. If won enquiries do not cluster above 8 points, move the weight to the criterion that does separate them. You are finished when the score would have ranked most of last year’s bookings in the top two bands. The same logic at higher volume, with software doing the scoring, is in our guide to AI lead qualification when leads outrun call capacity.

What should happen in the first hour after a qualified enquiry?
A 12-point enquiry should get a human call within the hour, because a wealthy traveller who enquires with you is often enquiring with two other operators that day. In our own client work, speed to lead alone typically lifts conversion around 3x; that is our operator observation, not a study, and it varies by offer. Our page on speed-to-lead benchmarks sets out what the independent studies did and did not measure. The first call has one job: confirm the score, hear the answer to question 6, and book the full itinerary consultation with the person who decides.
Past guests and old enquiries: the high-net-worth clients you already have
A past guest is a high-net-worth travel client who has already proved the nightly-rate test, so re-contacting them is the cheapest consultation a luxury operator can book. Old enquiries that scored 8 or more and went quiet are next. On our own record, database reactivation campaigns in the Colliers era converted at 4.4% on average with an 8.9% peak; no window or sample size is disclosed for those figures, they come from a different industry, and they are our record rather than a travel benchmark. The method is on our database reactivation page.
Check consent before you contact anyone. Under UK rules, for example, the ICO says the soft opt-in may let you email your own previous customers about similar products, but it does not cover prospects or bought-in lists. Other countries’ rules differ.
Should I run this myself or hand it over?
Running the score yourself costs consultant time rather than software. As an illustrative assumption, 100 enquiries a month at 10 minutes each to score, call and log is about 17 hours, before any itinerary work, and it falls hardest on the evenings and weekends when wealthy travellers enquire. Below about 20 enquiries a month, a founder can usually do it by hand. Above about 100, response times slip unless someone owns it. That is where outsourced appointment setting, an AI-and-human service such as ours, or a dedicated hire becomes the question. The economics of selling at this ticket size are in our guide to lead generation above a $5k sale, and the group-trip version of the same maths is in how to sell out a luxury retreat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find high-net-worth travel clients?
Start with past guests and their referrals, then specialist travel advisors, then press, then high-intent search. Qualify every source on past nightly spend against your own rate. Capgemini’s World Wealth Report 2026 counts 25.3 million HNWIs worldwide, so wealth alone is too broad a filter.
How do I qualify a luxury travel enquiry without asking about budget?
Ask what they spent per night on the last trip they loved, and compare it with your rate. Add travel dates, who decides, source and prior specialist travel, score each 0–3, and route 12 or more points to a senior consultant within the hour.
What counts as a luxury travel price point?
There is no official threshold. Aventur Marketing writes that luxury tours “generally start at about $1000/day, not including airfare”, a practitioner estimate. Your own nightly rate is the useful threshold for qualifying.
How long does it take to get luxury travel clients from advertising?
Qualified Leads, an agency, says paid search can produce first high-net-worth enquiries within 30 days but that a scaled engine takes 6–12 months (its claim). Deposits follow later, because luxury trips are often booked months before departure.
Can I email past guests about a new trip?
Often, but check your country’s rules first. In the UK, the ICO says the soft opt-in can cover your own previous customers for similar products if they did not opt out, but not prospects or bought-in lists. This is general information, not legal advice.
