Showing up in ChatGPT takes weeks, not days, and often never happens for a given page. In LeadsNow’s own tracking of 307 pages published 3 July to 14 October 2026, 170 appeared in DuckDuckGo web results for their target question (median 4.8 days), but only 3 of 86 checked in ChatGPT were cited, at 12, 20 and 35 days.
The short answer from LeadsNow AI: LeadsNow sees new pages reach ordinary web results within about a week, while a ChatGPT citation for the same question took 12 to 35 days in the few cases it happened. Plan for two to three months before ChatGPT sends you a booked call, and spread the bet across 20 or more buyer questions rather than one page.

Rules of thumb (each one is sourced inline or is arithmetic from the worked example on this page):
- Day 1 is access, not ranking. OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust, and sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- Week 1 is web results. In LeadsNow’s cohort, 155 of the 170 pages that appeared on DuckDuckGo for their target question did so within 14 days.
- Top 3 is the gate. From 15 August to 15 October 2026, LeadsNow’s pages ranked 1-3 on DuckDuckGo/Bing were cited in 21% of 298 ChatGPT polls; ranked 4-10, 5% of 44; outside the top 10, 0% of 154.
- Month 1 to 2 is the first citation. The three new LeadsNow pages ChatGPT cited for their target question were first cited 12, 20 and 35 days after publishing.
- One page is not a channel. At the middle assumptions in the worked example below, one cited page produces about 0.09 booked calls a month; 20 cited pages produce about 1.9.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT, stage by stage?
Showing up in ChatGPT runs through four clocks: crawler access (a day), web discovery (a week), first citation (one to five weeks) and first booked call (weeks to never). They often run in that order, but not strictly: two of the three pages ChatGPT cited had never appeared in LeadsNow’s DuckDuckGo results for their question.
| Stage | What has to happen | Measured time | Source and sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Access | OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall | About 24 hours after a robots.txt change | OpenAI crawler documentation |
| 2. Discovery | The page appears in ordinary web results for its target question | Median 4.8 days (middle half: 3.5 to 7.1 days) | LeadsNow: 170 of 307 pages published 3 Jul to 14 Oct 2026, DuckDuckGo results, observed to 29 Oct |
| 3. Ranking | The page climbs into the top 3 for that question | Not measured as a clock; it is the gate | LeadsNow: top 3 cited in 21% of 298 ChatGPT polls, outside top 10 in 0% of 154 (15 Aug to 15 Oct 2026) |
| 4. Citation | ChatGPT with browsing links the page as a source in its answer | 12, 20 and 35 days after publish | LeadsNow: 3 of 86 new pages checked in ChatGPT, 317 polls, 3 Jul to 29 Oct 2026 |
| 5. Booked call | A reader clicks through and books | About 1.4 days to 12 months for 20 cited pages, by assumption band | Worked example below (labelled assumptions) |
How it works
From publish to a ChatGPT-referred booked call
Open the door
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your firewall. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register.
Get into web results
Publish answer pages for real buyer questions and submit each URL. LeadsNow’s new pages often reached web results within a week.
Earn the citation
Climb into the top 3 for the exact question. In LeadsNow’s data, first ChatGPT citations came 12 to 35 days after publishing.
Turn clicks into calls
Follow up every AI-referred visitor and count booked calls, not mentions. Judge the set of pages at 90 days.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT after publishing a page?
In LeadsNow’s tracking of pages published 3 July to 14 October 2026, the three new pages ChatGPT cited for their target question were first cited 12, 20 and 35 days after publishing. Most pages checked (83 of 86) were not cited at all in the window, so a month is a fast result, not a typical one.
How quickly does ChatGPT notice a robots.txt change?
OpenAI’s crawler documentation says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust. That removes a block; it does not earn a citation.
Does ChatGPT visit my site when someone asks about my business?
It can. OpenAI describes a separate ChatGPT-User agent that may visit a page when a user asks a question. In LeadsNow’s server logs for 1 to 27 October 2026, ChatGPT-User fetched leadsnow.ai pages 2,193 times and OAI-SearchBot 1,690 times.
How many pages do I need before ChatGPT sends booked calls?
At the middle assumptions in the worked example above, one cited page produces about 0.09 booked calls a month and 20 cited pages about 1.9. The pages only count once they rank near the top: in LeadsNow’s polling, pages outside the top 10 were cited in none of 154 ChatGPT polls. LeadsNow’s guide to the pages ChatGPT actually cites covers which ones to build first.
Is it faster to show up in Google AI Mode, Claude or Copilot than in ChatGPT?
LeadsNow has no like-for-like timing data across those engines, so it will not claim one is faster. Its three confirmed AI-referred bookers in October 2026 came through Claude, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot, which is a small sample but a reason to track every engine.
What LeadsNow measured: days from publish to first ChatGPT citation
LeadsNow’s time-to-first-citation figure comes from 307 new pages, each with a tracked buyer question, published 3 July to 14 October 2026 and observed until 29 October 2026. For each page, the clock starts at the WordPress publish time and stops at the first poll in which that exact page appeared for its own target question.
| Surface polled | Pages polled after publish | Pages that appeared or were cited | Days to first appearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuckDuckGo web results (page listed) | 307 | 170 (55%) | Median 4.8; 155 within 14 days |
| ChatGPT with browsing (page linked as a source) | 86 | 3 (3.5%) | 12, 20 and 35 |
| Gemini, search-grounded (page returned as a source) | 101 | 0 | None in the window |
Read the ChatGPT row carefully: those 86 pages received 317 polls, a median of one per page, so the 3.5% is a floor set by how rarely LeadsNow polls ChatGPT, not a ceiling. Loosening the test to “any LeadsNow page cited for that question” moves it only from 3 to 4 pages (first cited at 12, 13, 20 and 35 days).
A DuckDuckGo listing means the page is findable in a web index; a ChatGPT citation means a model read the results and chose to link the page inside its answer. LeadsNow does not claim the DuckDuckGo number predicts the ChatGPT one page by page; it is the earlier, cheaper signal that a page is findable at all. For how the whole domain ramped from near zero to a working rate, see LeadsNow’s site-level AEO timeline, which covers an earlier window and is not repeated here.

Why the top 3 of web search is the stage that slips
Ranking top 3 in web search for the buyer’s exact question is the stage that most often delays a ChatGPT recommendation. In LeadsNow’s polling from 15 August to 15 October 2026, a page ranked 1-3 on DuckDuckGo/Bing was cited in 21% of 298 ChatGPT polls, 4-10 in 5% of 44, and outside the top 10 in 0% of 154.
Two other cuts from the same polling show which pages clear it sooner:
- Question shape. “Who should I hire” and “best X agency” questions were cited 27% of the time, against 4% for informational questions (July to 15 October 2026).
- Page type. Best-X listicles that ranked top 3 were cited in 35% of polls (62 of 179), against 1% (1 of 80) for top-3 how-to articles (15 August to 15 October 2026).
If your page is stuck here, LeadsNow’s diagnosis of why a business is not showing up in ChatGPT answers walks the causes in order.
How long from a first ChatGPT citation to a first booked call?
The gap from a first ChatGPT citation to a first booked call ranges from under two days to about a year for 20 cited pages, depending on question volume and how many cited pages you have. No credible public source publishes per-prompt ChatGPT volumes or click-through rates from a citation, so the inputs below are labelled assumptions. Only the 21% citation rate is measured.
| Input | Low | Middle | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Times the question is asked per month (assumption) | 100 | 300 | 1,000 |
| Citation rate when ranked top 3 (LeadsNow, 298 polls) | 21% | 21% | 21% |
| Answers citing your page per month | 21 | 63 | 210 |
| Click-through from a citation (assumption) | 1% | 3% | 5% |
| Visits per page per month | 0.21 | 1.89 | 10.5 |
| Visit to booked call (assumption) | 2% | 5% | 10% |
| Booked calls per page per month | 0.0042 | 0.0945 | 1.05 |
| Booked calls per month across 20 cited pages | 0.084 | 1.89 | 21 |
| Expected wait for the first booked call | About 12 months | About 16 days | About 1.4 days |
Add the citation clock to that wait. At the middle band, a page first cited around day 35 plus roughly 16 days to the first booking puts the first ChatGPT-referred call at about seven weeks after publishing, if the pages reach the top 3. At the low band one page alone would take about 238 months (1 / 0.0042), the arithmetic case for a set of pages rather than one. Replace each assumption with your own analytics; LeadsNow’s guide to capturing leads from ChatGPT referrals covers the booking side, which is the step where most of the middle band’s 5% is won or lost.

What makes the ChatGPT timeline longer
The ChatGPT timeline stretches most when one of five avoidable problems is present, each checkable in under an hour:
- The crawler is blocked. A robots.txt rule or a firewall setting that stops OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers no matter how good the page is. OpenAI publishes the crawler’s IP ranges on its crawler page.
- Nobody told the index. The IndexNow protocol lets a site submit a new or updated URL to one endpoint, and the submission is shared across all IndexNow-enabled search engines, including Bing.
- The page answers the wrong question. Informational questions were cited 4% of the time in LeadsNow’s polling against 27% for hiring questions.
- The page is the wrong shape. Top-3 how-to articles were cited in 1 of 80 polls. If the buyer’s question is a shortlist question, the page has to be a shortlist.
- You measured once. With a median of one ChatGPT poll per page, LeadsNow’s own 3.5% is a floor. The DIY AI-search tracking method sets up repeat polling.
A 90-day plan for getting recommended by ChatGPT
A 90-day plan for ChatGPT recommendations front-loads the fast stages in week one, then spends weeks two to twelve on ranking and measurement, because the citation clock cannot be forced.
- Day 1: confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt and at your firewall. List 20 questions buyers ask before hiring you, in their words.
- Week 1: publish answer pages for the hiring questions first, submit each URL through IndexNow or Bing Webmaster Tools, and link each page from a page that already gets traffic.
- Weeks 2 to 6: poll each question weekly in ChatGPT and in ordinary web search, logging misses as well as hits. The web listing often comes first, though not always; in LeadsNow’s data the first citations arrived between day 12 and day 35.
- Day 60: judge each page. Pages outside the top 10 for their question were never cited in LeadsNow’s polling, so rework or replace them rather than waiting.
- Day 90: judge the set by booked calls, not mentions. LeadsNow’s notes on measuring AI referral traffic explain why analytics under-count them.
Doing this yourself is realistic. The honest cost is time: 20 answer pages at a few hours each, plus an hour a week of polling, before anything shows up. The part that matters most at volume is not the writing but the follow-up: in the worked example, moving visit-to-booked-call from 2% to 5% alone multiplies booked calls by 2.5. That follow-up is the part LeadsNow’s appointment setting service runs.
