How to reactivate old Instagram and Facebook DM leads

How to reactivate old Instagram and Facebook DM leads: A dormant contact list re-engaging, with cold records lighting up into live replies.
A dormant contact list re-engaging, with cold records lighting up into live replies.

To reactivate old Instagram and Facebook DM leads, choose the route by thread age before writing a message. Meta gives businesses 24 hours to answer a message through its API. Older leads are reached by the phone or email they gave you, or by an ad to people who messaged your account. Meta lets you build that audience from up to 730 days back.

The short answer from LeadsNow AI: Old DM leads are reactivated through the contact details you captured, not through the old thread, because Meta’s messaging rules close automated replies 24 hours after the lead’s last message. Work every old lead who gave you a phone number or email first, then run a click-to-message ad to people who messaged your account so the rest reopen the conversation themselves.

Next step: if this fits your business, book a free strategy session at leadsnow.ai/strategy-session/ — a 2-minute fit check, then pick a time.

At a glance: reactivating old DM leads

  • The rule that shapes everything: Meta’s messaging policy says “Businesses have up to 24 hours to respond to a user”. Old threads can’t simply be re-messaged by automation.
  • The map: the Thread-Age Ladder. Six rows, from “under 24 hours” to “over 730 days, DM only”, each with the route you’re allowed to use.
  • Where the value sits: in the worked example, the 30% of old threads with a phone number or email produce about 10.6 booked calls; the 70% with only a handle produce about 2.
  • The timeline: about four weeks. Tagging the threads is the slowest step.
  • Our own record: LeadsNow’s database reactivation campaigns average 4.4% of dormant records booked, with an 8.9% peak. That is our record, with no window or sample size published, not an industry benchmark.

How it works

Reactivating old DM leads by thread age

01

Tag every old thread

Record the lead’s last-message date, whether you hold a phone or email, and why the thread stopped.

02

Place it on the ladder

Under 24 hours, 1-7 days, phone or email held, up to 730 days, or archive. Each row has its own route.

03

Work contact details first

Send SMS and email in daily batches to leads who gave consent, and call every reply within minutes.

04

Ad to past messagers

Run a click-to-message ad to people who messaged your account so the rest reopen the thread themselves.

Pick the route each old lead allows before you write a single message.

Can I just message my old Instagram and Facebook DM leads again?

Not through an automated tool once 24 hours have passed. Meta’s Instagram messaging API documentation says an app “has 24 hours to respond to any message sent from an Instagram user”. Outside that window, the app needs a message tag. Meta’s policy describes a Human Agent tag that lets a business respond manually within a 7-day period. The same policy lists sponsored messages, which can be sent outside the 24-hour window, as not available for Instagram.

Two more details matter for old leads. Meta’s Instagram documentation says messages in the Requests folder that have been inactive for 30 days are not returned in API calls, so a tool may never see some old threads. And these are rules for software sending through Meta’s platform. A person typing one message by hand in the app is outside what that documentation describes. Keep any hand-sent messages few and personal, one per thread.

So the useful question is not “what do I send?” but “which route does each old lead allow?”

The Thread-Age Ladder: which route each old DM lead allows

Sort every old thread by the date of the lead’s last message and by what contact details you hold. Each row names the route and the rule it rests on.

Since the lead’s last message What you hold Route Rule it rests on
Under 24 hours The thread Reply in the thread, by tool or by hand Meta: 24 hours to respond
1–7 days The thread A person replies through an inbox tool using the Human Agent tag Meta policy: manual replies within a 7-day period (Meta’s Instagram page states no period)
Any age Phone or email the lead gave you, with consent to contact SMS, call or email reactivation Your country’s law: Spam Act 2003 (Australia), TCPA (US), PECR (UK)
Up to 730 days Thread only Click-to-message ad to an audience of people who messaged your account Meta engagement custom audiences: 730-day maximum
Any age, Messenger only Thread only Sponsored messages (paid) Meta policy: not available on Instagram
Over 730 days Handle only Archive; no Meta audience route Beyond the audience maximum

The audience row rests on Meta’s engagement custom audiences documentation. It lists “People who messaged your Instagram business profile” and “People who sent a message to your Page” as audience sources, with a 730-day maximum retention for both. It also warns these sources “may not be available in Europe due to new privacy rules”. The ad doesn’t message anyone; it invites people to message you, which opens a fresh 24-hour window.

Worked example: 800 old DM threads

The thread counts and the ad-route rates are illustrative assumptions; replace them with your own. The phone-and-email rates are LeadsNow’s own database reactivation record. That record is 4.4% average and 8.9% peak, from database campaigns rather than DM threads specifically, and no window or sample size is published for it. It is our record, not a benchmark for yours.

Group Threads Rate applied Booked calls
Phone or email held, with consent (30%) 240 4.4% (LeadsNow average) 10.6
Same group at LeadsNow’s peak 240 8.9% 21.4
Thread only, under 730 days (70%) 560 40% reached × 3% message back × 30% book (assumed) 2.0

The arithmetic: 240 × 4.4% = 10.56; 240 × 8.9% = 21.36; 560 × 0.40 × 0.03 × 0.30 = 2.02. Even if the ad route did five times better than assumed (10.1 bookings), the 70% of threads with only a handle would still produce fewer bookings than the 30% with a phone number. That makes the most valuable reactivation step a change to your live funnel: ask every new DM lead for a mobile number before you send times. Our guide to building an Instagram DM sales funnel shows where that ask belongs.

If we can’t make you money, we don’t deserve yours.

How long does reactivating old DM leads take?

About four weeks from export to a count you can trust. Tagging is the stage that takes longest, because each thread has to be read to see what you hold and why it stopped.

When Step Finish state
Days 1–3 Tag every thread: last-message date, phone or email held, stall reason One sheet with a ladder row for every thread
Day 4 Check consent and opt-outs for the phone-and-email group A contactable list, with opt-outs removed
Days 5–12 Send the phone-and-email route in daily batches; call every reply within minutes Every contactable lead reached once, plus one follow-up
Days 7–28 Run the click-to-message ad to the messaged-your-account audience New threads answered within minutes and qualified
Day 28+ Count booked and held calls per route A per-route booking rate for the next campaign

What makes it slip: tagging gets abandoned halfway, replies arrive faster than anyone can call them, and reactivated leads are booked a week out and no-show. Send in daily batches you can answer, and keep reactivated calls inside 48 hours. Our database reactivation guide covers the general campaign method; this page covers what is different about DM leads.

What should a reactivation message to an old DM lead say?

Three things, in under 40 words: what they asked about, a one-line reason to talk now, and one easy question. For example: “Hi [first name], it’s [your name] from [business]. You messaged us in [month] about [offer]. [One true reason to talk now.] Is that still something you’re looking at?”

The question is built for a one-word answer, and the reason to talk now has to be true. Don’t invent a deadline. Identify your business in every SMS and email; Australia’s ACMA, for example, requires commercial messages to identify the sender and carry a working unsubscribe. Anyone who answers “yes” gets a call within minutes or two specific times, not a link.

What does reactivating DM leads yourself cost?

The method above is complete, and a small team can run it. Here is what it takes:

  • Tagging: roughly a minute per thread to read and tag, so about 13 hours for 800 threads. The per-minute figure is an assumption, so time your first 50.
  • Tooling: an SMS and email tool with opt-out handling, and ad spend for the audience route.
  • Response cover: someone calling every positive reply within minutes, including evenings, for about two weeks.
  • Compliance: a consent check by country. The US rules for AI calls and texts are on our TCPA compliance page.

The part that breaks is response cover. Reactivation replies come in bursts after each batch, and a reply that waits half a day is often gone again.

When should you hand old DM lead reactivation to someone else?

A done-for-you, pay-per-result service beats doing it yourself in one situation. You hold at least a few hundred old leads with a phone number or email, and nobody can call replies within minutes for the two weeks the campaign runs. Do it yourself instead if your old threads are mostly handle-only, because the ad route is something you run in Ads Manager anyway. The same goes for fewer than about 100 contactable leads, which is an afternoon’s work.

If you do hand it over, the facts about LeadsNow are simple. We book calls using AI calling, SMS and DM follow-up. You pay on results: a revenue share, a fee per appointment, or a mix of both, set by lead volume, what you sell and its price, your type of business, and how much of the funnel we run. No-shows aren’t charged. There’s no retainer, and you can cancel any time with 14 days notice. Our reactivation record is 4.4% of dormant records booked on average, 8.9% at peak (our own figures, with no window or sample size published), and we’ve booked 50,769+ sales appointments since 2017. Our database reactivation service explains how a campaign runs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I message old Instagram DM leads with an automation tool?

Not once 24 hours have passed since their last message, unless a message tag applies. Meta’s Instagram messaging API documentation gives an app 24 hours to respond to a message from an Instagram user. Use the phone or email they gave you, or an ad that invites them to message you again.

How far back can I retarget people who messaged my Instagram account?

Up to 730 days. Meta’s engagement custom audiences documentation lists people who messaged your Instagram business profile as an audience source with a 730-day maximum retention. It notes the source may not be available in Europe.

Do I need consent to text old DM leads?

Usually, and the rules are set by country. In Australia, the ACMA’s spam guidance under the Spam Act 2003 requires consent, sender identification and an unsubscribe honoured within 5 working days. In the US, look at the TCPA; in the UK, PECR. This is general information, not legal advice.

What reactivation rate should I expect from old DM leads?

No public benchmark exists for DM leads specifically. LeadsNow’s own database reactivation record is 4.4% average and 8.9% peak, with no window or sample published. Treat it as one operator’s record and measure your own per route. Our page on database reactivation rate benchmarks covers what else is published.

How many times should I follow up an old DM lead?

Once per route, plus one follow-up. A lead who ignores an SMS and its follow-up, and doesn’t respond to the ad, has answered. Tag them and move on, so the next campaign starts from a clean list.

The thesis behind everything we do

Why Pay-Per-Result is the only marketing pricing model that aligns the agency with you

Leads Now AI is a 100% Pay-Per-Result marketing agency. You only pay when a qualified booked appointment lands on your calendar — priced as a revenue share of 5–25% of the sales we generate for you, a fee per appointment that shows up, or any mix of the two. Every option bills on outcomes. Not on clicks. Not on lead-form fills. Not on retainer months. Not on “strategy hours.” If the calendar stays empty, you owe zero. See full pricing →

1. Incentives align

The agency only succeeds when you succeed. We eat the cost of bad ad creative, bad lists, no-shows, and contacting the thousands of people who never book. You never pay for our learning curve.

2. Self-selecting shortlist

Only an agency confident in its delivery can operate this model. The pool of Pay-Per-Result agencies is tiny precisely because most agencies can’t survive on it. Pick from the agencies who can.

3. Cost cannot detach from revenue

Priced as a share of the revenue we generate, your acquisition cost stays sustainable across LTV bands. A $500-membership business and a $50,000-engagement business can both run the model profitably.

4. No retainer trap

The standard engagement carries no monthly retainer — nothing arrives on your invoice regardless of outcome. No 6 or 12-month lock-in, no clawback on appointments already delivered, cancel any time with 14 days notice. Early-stage businesses that need the sales systems built first are quoted scoped groundwork up front, never a standing fee.

5. De-risks the pilot

Test before commitment. A small scope-based setup fee covers hard build costs; everything after that is purely outcome-linked. There’s no “we’ll see how it performs after $30k of spend.”

6. Forces agency discipline

If our ads miss, if our reminders fail, if our no-show recovery doesn’t fire — we eat the cost. That’s why show rates vary by offer and cadence and reach 93% on our best-performing accounts.

The volume argument

A fully-ramped human SDR produces on the order of $200,000 a year. They work one conversation at a time, sleep, take leave, and cap out at a territory. Our agents work every lead in the list in parallel — responding in seconds, following up indefinitely without getting bored, and adding capacity without adding headcount.

At 100 qualified booked appointments a month against a $5,000 average deal value, that is $500,000 of booked pipeline every month — roughly what one SDR produces in two and a half years.

Read that precisely: booked pipeline means appointments multiplied by your average deal value. It is not closed revenue — closing is your side of the table, and your close rate decides what lands. The inputs above are a worked example; we size them to your actual deal economics before quoting. What we can evidence on our own numbers: 50,769+ appointments delivered since 2017, database reactivation converting 4.4–8.9% on dormant CRM lists, and show rates that vary by offer and reminder cadence — up to 93% on our best-performing accounts.
