- Scope: consultants who help US students apply to college (undergraduate, first-year and transfer). Private and boarding school (K-12) consulting is covered in how much a private school admissions consultant costs.
- Market averages: CollegePlannerPro’s 2025 IEC Pricing Survey: $239 an hour, $6,388 total per student, 92% of consultants sell packages. It covers independent educational consultants generally and does not separate college from other work. CollegePlannerPro has since released a 2026 edition covering 2025 rates from 550+ consultants as a gated download; we have not checked its figures, so this page uses the 2025 edition.
- Published firm prices: SOS Admissions’ college admissions page, read October 19, 2026: $465 for a planning service up to $15,600 for a ten-college package.
- The decision rule: the 27-Hour Line. Average package ÷ average hourly rate = 26.7 hours; below it, hourly help is cheaper.
- The free alternative: a school counselor, at a national ratio of 372 students per counselor in 2024–2025 (ASCA).
How much does a college admissions consultant cost?
A college admissions consultant costs $239 an hour or $6,388 per student on average in the 2025 IEC Pricing Survey; one firm’s prices run $465 to $15,600. All prices are in US dollars; the survey reports 2024 rates.
| Engagement | Price (USD) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average hourly rate, all consultants | $239 an hour ($163 in the 2019 report) | IEC Pricing Survey 2025 |
| Average total cost per student | $6,388 ($3,862 in the 2019 report) | IEC Pricing Survey 2025 |
| Average total, first-year consultant vs 11+ years | $5,107 vs $7,284 | IEC Pricing Survey 2025 |
| Application planning and evaluation | $465 | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
| School selection service | $1,875 | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
| Essays for one non-UC college (primary essay included) | $1,985, then $992.50 per additional college | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
| College interview coaching | $1,775 | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
| Complete application package, unlimited hours | $8,775 first college + $975 each additional | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
| Complete package, ten colleges | $15,600 + $975 each additional | SOS Admissions, 2026 |
The survey’s average total cost rose by more than 65% between the 2019 and 2025 reports, which is why quotes from even two years ago understate today’s prices. The quotable version: college admissions consulting is sold by the package, so the hours you actually need decide whether the package is a bargain.

Frequently asked questions
These college admissions consultant cost questions are the ones US families and consultants search for, answered in two to four sentences each.
How much does a college admissions consultant cost per hour?
The average was $239 an hour in CollegePlannerPro’s 2025 IEC Pricing Survey of 600 consultants, reporting 2024 rates. Averages ranged from $203 in the Southwest to $266 in the Northeast, and the highest hourly rate reported was $550.
Is a comprehensive college admissions package worth it?
It is worth it if you need more than about 27 hours of help, the point where the $6,388 average package costs less than paying $239 an hour. For essay review and a list check of around 15 hours, hourly help costs about $3,585.
How many colleges should a consulting package cover?
That depends on the student, but more colleges lower the price per college. On SOS Admissions’ published packages, one college costs $8,775 and ten cost $15,600, or $1,560 each, and the firm recommends applying to at least ten.
Do college admissions consultants guarantee admission?
NACAC members should not be paid commissions or bonuses based on students admitted or enrolled, under the NACAC Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission. Treat any admission guarantee as a reason to ask how the consultant is paid.
Is a school counselor enough for college applications?
For many students it is, but caseloads are high: the American School Counselor Association reports a national ratio of 372 students per counselor for 2024-2025. Ask your counselor what support every senior gets, then buy only the hours that are missing.

The 27-Hour Line: when paying by the hour beats a package
The 27-Hour Line says a family needing under about 27 hours of help pays less by the hour than for the average package ($6,388 ÷ $239 = 26.7 hours). The line moves with the consultant’s experience, as the survey’s own averages show.
| Consultant experience | Average total per student | Average hourly rate | Crossover hours (total ÷ hourly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 1 year | $5,107 | $217 | 23.5 |
| 1–5 years | $5,647 | $219 | 25.8 |
| 6–10 years | $5,999 | $230 | 26.1 |
| 11+ years | $7,284 | $263 | 27.7 |
| All consultants | $6,388 | $239 | 26.7 |
Worked example: a student who needs essay review and a college-list check, about 15 hours, pays 15 × $239 = $3,585 by the hour, $2,803 less than the average package. A student who needs full support for 35 hours pays 35 × $239 = $8,365 by the hour, $1,977 more than the average package. The survey’s hours data matches this split: 52% of hourly-only consultants reported 11–20 hours per client, while 54% of package consultants reported 30 or more. The averages come from the same survey but may reflect different respondents in each band, so treat the crossover as a guide, not a quote.
Rules of thumb (survey averages and plain arithmetic from the tables on this page):
- If you need about 15 hours of essay and list help, expect $3,585 at the $239 average hourly rate.
- If you need 35 hours of full support, expect $8,365 by the hour against a $6,388 average package.
- If you apply to ten colleges on SOS Admissions’ complete package, expect $1,560 per college, against $8,775 for one.
- If your consultant has 11+ years’ experience, expect to pay about $2,177 more on average than with a first-year consultant ($7,284 vs $5,107).

What does each college on the list add to the bill?
Each additional college on a complete SOS Admissions package costs $975, so the price per college falls from $8,775 for one college to $1,462.50 each for twelve.
| Colleges on the list | Package price | Cost per college |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $8,775 | $8,775.00 |
| 5 | $11,700 | $2,340.00 |
| 10 | $15,600 | $1,560.00 |
| 12 | $17,550 ($15,600 + 2 × $975) | $1,462.50 |
SOS Admissions says the packages apply to one application cycle, that services outside a package are billed at its standard hourly rate (not printed on the page), and that it recommends applying to at least ten schools. Essay-only work is priced separately: $1,985 for one college, $5,955 for five and $10,917.50 for ten, with University of California Personal Insight Questions a separate $1,985 per application. College application fees and test fees are paid to colleges and testing agencies on top.
Why college admissions consultants charge more in some regions
College admissions consultants in the Northeast averaged $266 an hour in the 2025 IEC Pricing Survey, against $203 in the Southwest, a gap of $63 an hour. The survey’s regional averages, all 2024 rates:
- Southwest $203, Southeast $216, Mountain West $224, Midwest $234, West Coast $238.
- Mid-Atlantic $258, nationwide practices $261, Northeast $266, outside the US $284.
- California, the most reported state, averaged $245 an hour and $6,939 per student.
A family is not limited to consultants in its own region: 25% of survey respondents described their service area as nationwide and 7% as worldwide.

What does a school counselor give you for free?
A public school counselor is the free alternative, and the American School Counselor Association reports a national ratio of 372 students per counselor for 2024–2025 against its recommended 250. ASCA estimates high school ratios of 195:1 to 224:1 in the 35 states that report them separately, and says about 17% of high schools have no school counselor at all. Ask your counselor first what they do for every senior, then price only the gap with the 27-Hour Line.
Can you pay a college consultant only if your child gets in?
NACAC’s Guide to Ethical Practice in College Admission (2026 edition) says members should not be paid commissions, bonuses or incentives based on students admitted or enrolled. The full clause covers payments based on the number of students referred, recruited, admitted or enrolled. A consultant who belongs to NACAC should therefore not offer admission-contingent fees, and an offer to refund unless your child gets in is a reason to ask more questions. Payment plans are normal instead: in the IEC survey, 90% of package consultants take installments, 28% require some prepayment, and 7% collect after services are delivered.
If you are a consultant, what is one family consultation worth?
For a college admissions consultant, one free consultation is worth about $127.76 at the $6,388 average package, assuming 20% become clients and a 10% acquisition share. The 20% conversion and 10% share are assumptions; replace them with your own. The worked sum is $6,388 × 0.20 × 0.10 = $127.76, and it is the most you should pay any channel or agency per consultation that actually happens. Consultants who price below the survey average, or who sell hourly-only engagements of 11–20 hours, can afford much less. Our guides to how admissions consultants get clients and lead generation for admissions consultants cover the channels; the broader package-design question is in admissions consulting pricing.
