How much does AI agent development cost in Australia (2026)?

How much does AI agent development cost in Australia (2026)?: Email, SMS and voice outreach from an AI sales agent converging into a booked calendar appointment.
Email, SMS and voice outreach from an AI sales agent converging into a booked calendar appointment.

A custom AI sales or marketing agent built by an Australian developer or agency costs about A$9,600 to A$120,000 to build across our three labelled assumption bands (80 to 480 hours at A$120 to A$250 an hour), then about A$823 a month to run on 1,000 leads at vendor list prices read on 15 October 2026. LeadsNow sees booked-call costs of $30–$400, depending on industry, offer, price and many other variables.

  • The build: five line items: conversation design, agent logic, integrations, testing and compliance. Integrations are often the largest single line.
  • The rate: no public survey publishes Australian AI agency hourly rates, so A$120, A$180 and A$250 an hour are labelled assumptions. Replace them with the rates on your quotes.
  • The in-house benchmark: SEEK’s October 2026 salary data, drawn from salaries employers disclose in job ads, lists an average software engineer salary of A$110,750 in Sydney, or A$124,040 with 12% super (some advertised salaries already include super).
  • The run cost: US$572.25 a month on 1,000 leads from OpenAI and Twilio list prices, converted at the RBA’s 15 October 2026 rate of US$0.6955 per A$1: A$822.79.
  • The decision rule: the per-lead-worked test. Divide one year of build, upkeep and run cost by the leads the agent works, and compare that with what a lead is worth to you.

What does each line item in an Australian AI agent build cost?

An Australian AI agent build at a standard 200-hour scope costs A$24,000 to A$50,000, depending only on the hourly rate you are quoted.

The standard scope below is a sales or marketing agent that replies to new leads by SMS, calls the ones who want a call, qualifies them against your rules, books into one calendar and writes the outcome back to one CRM. The hours split is an assumption built from that scope, not a measured average; change the hours for any line your project does not need.

A 200-hour standard AI sales agent build costs A$36,000 at A$180 an hour, and integration work is 70 of those hours, the largest single line.
Line item (standard scope) Hours (assumption) At A$120/hr At A$180/hr At A$250/hr
Discovery and conversation design: qualifying rules, scripts, hand-off points 30 A$3,600 A$5,400 A$7,500
Agent logic: prompts, tools, booking rules, guardrails 40 A$4,800 A$7,200 A$10,000
Integrations: CRM write-back, calendar, SMS and voice numbers 70 A$8,400 A$12,600 A$17,500
Testing and evaluation: scripted test conversations, edge cases, fixes 40 A$4,800 A$7,200 A$10,000
Compliance and consent: unsubscribe handling, Do Not Call washing, privacy notice 20 A$2,400 A$3,600 A$5,000
Total 200 A$24,000 A$36,000 A$50,000

Ask every developer to quote against these five lines. A quote that cannot be split this way often hides integrations or testing inside a single “build” number, and those are the two lines that grow after sign-off. In an Australian AI agent quote, the integration line is the one to read first.

How it works

How to cost an AI sales agent build in Australia

01

List the five lines

Split every quote into conversation design, agent logic, integrations, testing and compliance.

02

Price the hours

Multiply each line’s hours by the quoted AUD rate; integrations are often the largest line.

03

Add run and upkeep

Add SMS, call minutes and model tokens at vendor list prices, converted at the RBA rate, plus monthly upkeep hours.

04

Run the per-lead test

Divide a year of build, upkeep and run cost by leads worked, then compare it with what a lead is worth.

Price the build by line item, add the monthly run and upkeep, then divide by the leads the agent will work.

How much does a simple, standard or complex AI agent cost in Australia?

Australian AI agent builds span A$9,600 for a simple single-channel agent to A$120,000 for a complex multi-system one in these assumption bands.

Build cost moves 12.5-fold across the bands, from A$9,600 for 80 hours at A$120 to A$120,000 for 480 hours at A$250.
Scope band (assumption) What it includes Hours Rate Build cost
Simple One channel (SMS or web chat), one calendar, no CRM write-back 80 A$120/hr A$9,600
Standard SMS plus voice, one CRM, one calendar, consent logging 200 A$180/hr A$36,000
Complex Voice, SMS, email and chat; several CRMs or a bespoke system; multiple calendars and routing; audit trail 480 A$250/hr A$120,000

Four drivers move a project between bands: the number of systems the agent must read and write, the number of channels, how many decision rules it must apply before it books, and whether a human must be able to take over mid-conversation. Each extra system adds an integration and its own test cases; each extra channel adds a second compliance regime. For the budget-level view of the same drivers across a whole programme, see what AI implementation costs once integration and data work are counted.

Worked calculation: what an AI sales agent costs to run each month on 1,000 leads

An AI sales agent working 1,000 Australian leads a month costs about A$822.79 in API and telephony charges at list prices read on 15 October 2026.

The usage pattern is an assumption: each lead receives six outbound SMS segments and sends four back, 40% take a three-minute call to an Australian mobile (1,200 minutes), and the text reasoning uses about 30,000 input and 1,500 output tokens per lead. Vendor prices are in US dollars and are quoted from each vendor’s own page.

On 1,000 leads a month, outbound SMS is A$444.28 of the A$822.79 run cost, more than half, while the language model costs A$107.84.
Cost line Quantity (assumption) List price (vendor page, 15 Oct 2026) US$ A$ at 0.6955
Outbound SMS, Australia 6,000 segments US$0.0515 per segment (Twilio) 309.00 444.28
Inbound SMS, Australia 4,000 segments US$0.0075 per segment (Twilio) 30.00 43.13
Outbound calls to Australian mobiles 1,200 minutes US$0.0750 per minute (Twilio) 90.00 129.40
Voice session (gpt-live-1) 1,200 minutes US$0.05 per minute (OpenAI) 60.00 86.27
Model input tokens (gpt-6.1-sol) 30 million US$2.00 per million (OpenAI) 60.00 86.27
Model output tokens (gpt-6.1-sol) 1.5 million US$10.00 per million (OpenAI) 15.00 21.57
Australian mobile number 1 number US$8.25 per month (Twilio) 8.25 11.86
Total 572.25 822.79

Prices come from OpenAI’s API pricing page, Twilio’s Australian SMS pricing and Australian voice pricing, and the RBA’s published exchange rate, all read on 15 October 2026. The AUD lines are rounded individually, so they sum to one cent less than the converted total. The model is the cheap part: an Australian AI agent’s run bill is mostly SMS segments, so message length and follow-up count matter more than which model you choose.

The per-lead-worked test: when does a custom AI agent pay for itself?

The per-lead-worked test divides a year of build, upkeep and run cost by leads worked; a standard A$36,000 build costs A$6.52 per lead at 1,000 leads a month.

The formula: (build cost ÷ 12) + monthly upkeep + monthly run cost, all divided by leads worked per month. The inputs below are the standard build (A$36,000, so A$3,000 a month over a year), an upkeep assumption of 15 hours a month at A$180 (A$2,700) for prompt fixes, integration breaks and review of transcripts, and the run cost of A$0.82 per lead from the table above.

The same A$36,000 agent costs A$29.32 per lead worked at 200 leads a month but A$1.96 at 5,000, because build and upkeep are fixed.
Leads worked per month Build (12-month spread) + upkeep Run cost Monthly total Cost per lead worked
200 A$5,700 A$164.56 A$5,864.56 A$29.32
500 A$5,700 A$411.39 A$6,111.39 A$12.22
1,000 A$5,700 A$822.79 A$6,522.79 A$6.52
2,000 A$5,700 A$1,645.58 A$7,345.58 A$3.67
5,000 A$5,700 A$4,113.95 A$9,813.95 A$1.96

Then apply your own booking rate. If the agent books 10% of 1,000 leads, A$6,522.79 buys 100 booked calls at A$65.23 each; at 5% it is A$130.46. Fixed costs dominate below about 500 leads a month, which is where a custom build is hardest to justify. Our guide to calculating cost per booked call covers what belongs in the numerator.

Build in-house, hire an agency, use a platform, or pay per result?

Four routes exist for an Australian business wanting an AI sales agent, and lead volume plus engineering capacity decide between them more than the build price does.

Below about 500 leads a month, fixed build cost dominates, so a platform or pay-per-result route often beats a custom build; above 2,000, building can pay.
Route What you pay for Fits when Wrong for
In-house engineer About A$124,040 a year (SEEK’s Sydney average advertised salary of A$110,750 plus 12% super), before payroll tax, tooling and recruitment Above ~2,000 leads a month and several agents to build One agent: the salary buys a year, the build takes weeks
Development agency A$9,600–A$120,000 build (assumption bands) plus upkeep hours 500+ leads a month, unusual systems, you want to own the code Teams with nobody to review transcripts after launch
Self-serve platform (for example Zian, a self-serve AI sales agent platform) Platform subscription plus usage, your own set-up time A standard flow and someone in-house who will configure it Bespoke CRMs or no one to own it
Done-for-you, pay per result LeadsNow charges 5–25% of the revenue we generate for you (revenue share), or an equivalent pay-per-appointment fee, or a mix of both, set by lead volume, what you sell and its price, the type of business, and how much of the funnel we run You want booked calls rather than software Businesses selling the agent itself as their product

LeadsNow builds and runs AI sales and marketing agents as part of its AI development work for Australian businesses and its AI appointment setting service; no-shows aren’t charged. The honest crossover: if your volume is under 500 leads a month and your follow-up is slow, fix speed to lead first; the agent is the second step.

Which Australian rules add cost to an AI sales agent?

Australian privacy, spam and telemarketing rules add roughly 20 build hours to a standard AI sales agent in our assumption, for consent, unsubscribes, register washing and disclosure.

  • SMS and email: the ACMA’s spam guidance under the Spam Act 2003 requires consent, sender identification and an easy unsubscribe on every marketing message, including one sent by someone else on your behalf.
  • Calls: the Do Not Call Register lets anyone making telemarketing calls wash their lists against the register before calling.
  • Privacy: the OAIC says privacy obligations apply to personal information put into an AI system and to output that contains it.

This is general information, not legal advice. Budget the compliance line even on a small build: retrofitting consent records after launch costs more than logging them from day one. The hidden costs of AI projects covers the post-launch lines, such as reviewing AI output, that no build quote includes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AI agent development cost in Australia?

In our labelled assumption bands, A$9,600 for a simple single-channel agent, about A$36,000 for a standard SMS and voice agent with one CRM, and up to A$120,000 for a complex multi-system build. Running it costs about A$823 a month on 1,000 leads at list API and telephony prices read on 15 October 2026.

Is it cheaper to hire an in-house AI developer in Australia?

Only if you have several agents to build. SEEK’s October 2026 salary data lists an average software engineer salary of A$110,750 in Sydney, about A$124,040 with 12% super, before payroll tax and recruitment. A single standard agent is about 200 hours of work.

Do I have to tell customers they are talking to an AI agent?

The OAIC’s guidance on privacy and commercially available AI products says businesses should ensure public-facing AI tools such as chatbots are clearly identified as such, and should update privacy policies to describe their AI use. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is the biggest monthly cost of running an AI sales agent in Australia?

In our 1,000-lead example, outbound SMS: A$444.28 of A$822.79, because Twilio lists Australian SMS at US$0.0515 per segment. The language model was A$107.84. Shorter messages and fewer follow-ups cut the bill faster than changing models.

How long does it take to build an AI agent?

The standard scope in our assumption is 200 hours of work, so a few weeks of elapsed time for a small team; integrations and testing are the parts that slip, because they depend on access to your CRM, calendar and phone numbers.

The thesis behind everything we do

Why Pay-Per-Result is the only marketing pricing model that aligns the agency with you

Leads Now AI is a 100% Pay-Per-Result marketing agency. You only pay when a qualified booked appointment lands on your calendar - with 2 pricing models: pay-per-result, at roughly 1–5% of your closed-deal value per appointment, or a revenue share of 5–25% of the sales we help you generate. Both bill on outcomes. Not on clicks. Not on lead-form fills. Not on retainer months. Not on “strategy hours.” If the calendar stays empty, you owe zero. See full pricing →

1. Incentives align

The agency only succeeds when you succeed. We eat the cost of bad ad creative, bad lists and no-shows. You never pay for our learning curve.

2. Self-selecting shortlist

Only an agency confident in its delivery can operate this model. The pool of Pay-Per-Result agencies is tiny precisely because most agencies can’t survive on it. Pick from the agencies who can.

3. Cost cannot detach from revenue

Priced as a share of the revenue we generate, your acquisition cost stays sustainable across LTV bands. A $500-membership business and a $50,000-engagement business can both run the model profitably.

4. No retainer trap

The standard engagement carries no monthly retainer - nothing arrives on your invoice regardless of outcome. No 6 or 12-month lock-in, no clawback on appointments already delivered, cancel any time with 14 days notice. Early-stage businesses that need the sales systems built first are quoted scoped groundwork up front, never a standing fee.

5. De-risks the pilot

Test before commitment. A small scope-based setup fee covers hard build costs; everything after that is purely outcome-linked. There’s no “we’ll see how it performs after $30k of spend.”

6. Forces agency discipline

If nobody books, or none of your meetings show, we eat the cost. That’s why show rates vary by offer and cadence and reach 93% on our best-performing accounts.

The volume argument

A fully-ramped human SDR produces on the order of $200,000 a year. They work one conversation at a time, sleep, take leave, and cap out at a territory. Our agents work every lead in the list in parallel - responding in seconds, following up indefinitely without getting bored, and adding capacity without adding headcount.

At 100 qualified booked appointments a month against a $5,000 average deal value, that is $500,000 of booked pipeline every month - roughly what one SDR produces in two and a half years.

Read that precisely: booked pipeline means appointments multiplied by your average deal value. It is not closed revenue - closing is your side of the table, and your close rate decides what lands. The inputs above are a worked example; we size them to your actual deal economics before quoting. What we can evidence on our own numbers: 50,769+ appointments delivered since 2017, database reactivation converting 4.4–8.9% on dormant CRM lists, and show rates that vary by offer and reminder cadence - up to 93% on our best-performing accounts.

The proof: 50,769+ AI-booked sales appointments delivered since 2017 across coaches, consultants, RTOs, course creators, finance brokers and B2B service firms in Australia, USA, UK, Canada, NZ and Europe.
