ChatGPT SEO Australia: How to Get Cited in 2026

ChatGPT SEO Australia: Email, SMS and voice outreach from an AI sales agent converging into a booked calendar appointment.
Email, SMS and voice outreach from an AI sales agent converging into a booked calendar appointment.

ChatGPT SEO Australia starts with a ranking problem, not a ChatGPT trick. In LeadsNow’s own tracking of its own pages (ChatGPT search, 15 August to 15 October 2026), a page ranking top 3 in DuckDuckGo or Bing for the question was cited in 21% of 298 runs; at rank 4-10, 5% of 44; outside the top 10, 0% of 154.

The short answer from LeadsNow AI: To get an Australian business cited by ChatGPT, allow OAI-SearchBot, then rank in the top 3 of DuckDuckGo or Bing for the exact question, because LeadsNow’s own pages outside the top 10 were cited in 0% of 154 ChatGPT search runs. Where the question is “best X”, publish a ranked list: LeadsNow’s top-3 ranked listicles were cited in 35% of 179 runs, against 1% of 80 for how-to articles.

  • Why Australia should care: ChatGPT held 78.23% of AI chatbot market share in Australia in September 2026, ahead of Google Gemini at 9.45% (Statcounter).
  • The gate: OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers” (OpenAI crawler docs).
  • The lever: rank. In LeadsNow’s tracking, top 3 beat rank 4-10 by 21% to 5%, and outside the top 10 scored zero.
  • The format: for “best X” questions, ranked listicles in the top 3 were cited in 35% of 179 runs; how-to articles in 1% of 80.
  • The slow stage: reaching the top 3 for the question. The robots.txt fix takes about 24 hours, per OpenAI.

Rules of thumb

  • Outside the top 10 in DuckDuckGo or Bing for the question, LeadsNow’s own pages got no ChatGPT citation: 0% of 154 runs.
  • On our pages, the top 3 was cited at a little over four times the rank 4-10 rate: 21% against 5% (21 ÷ 5 = 4.2).
  • For “best X” questions, our top-3 ranked lists beat our how-to articles: 35% of 179 runs against 1% of 80.
  • Blocking GPTBot (training) does not remove you from ChatGPT search; OpenAI says the two settings are independent. Blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
  • After a robots.txt change, allow about 24 hours before testing, per OpenAI.

What LeadsNow’s tracking shows about ChatGPT citations by search rank

LeadsNow’s tracking shows ChatGPT search cited its pages in 21% of runs when they ranked top 3 for the question, and never once in 154 runs when they ranked outside the top 10.

LeadsNow’s own pages in ChatGPT search, 15 August to 15 October 2026: top-3 pages were cited in 21% of 298 runs, rank 4-10 in 5% of 44, outside the top 10 in 0% of 154.
Where our page ranked for the question (DuckDuckGo/Bing) ChatGPT search runs Share of runs that cited our page
Top 3 298 21%
Rank 4-10 44 5%
Outside the top 10 154 0%
Page type, top 3 only: ranked best-X listicle 179 35%
Page type: how-to article 80 1%

Method and limits. The data comes from LeadsNow’s aeo-monitor, which runs our tracked questions through ChatGPT search and records whether one of our pages is cited, alongside where that page ranked in DuckDuckGo and Bing for the same question. Window: 15 August to 15 October 2026. It covers our own pages only (leadsnow.ai, an Australian lead generation site) and is not an industry benchmark; the rank 4-10 band has only 44 runs, so treat 5% as rough. What it does show is the shape on our own pages: ChatGPT rarely cited one that did not already rank well for the question it searched.

How it works

How an Australian page earns a ChatGPT citation

01

Allow OAI-SearchBot

Open robots.txt and your firewall to OpenAI’s search crawler. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours.

02

List buyer questions

Write the questions Australian buyers ask, in their words, suburbs and AUD prices included.

03

Rank top 3

One answer-first page per question, ranked lists for best-X questions. This is the longest stage.

04

Re-test on schedule

Run the same questions through ChatGPT search on a fixed schedule. Log cited or not, per question.

On LeadsNow’s own pages, ChatGPT search cited pages it could crawl that already ranked for the question, so access and rank come before format.

How ChatGPT search chooses which pages to cite

ChatGPT search can only cite pages its OAI-SearchBot crawler is allowed to reach, and within that pool, on LeadsNow’s own pages, search rank and page format lined up most closely with being cited.

OpenAI’s crawler documentation names three agents. OAI-SearchBot is “used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features”; OpenAI recommends allowing it and its published IP ranges. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s foundation models; disallowing it is a training opt-out, not a search opt-out. ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user’s request triggers it, and OpenAI says it “is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search”. So the first check for any Australian site is a single line of robots.txt.

Past that gate, the pattern in our tracking of our own pages is that ChatGPT behaved like a reader of search results: it cited what already ranked for the question it searched, and favoured pages shaped like the answer. A ranked list answers “who is best for X” in the form it was asked; a how-to answers a different question. Why ChatGPT and other engines pick different sources is covered in ChatGPT vs Perplexity citation overlap, and how to win once retrieved is in how to be in the 15% ChatGPT actually cites.

The ChatGPT SEO process for an Australian business, stage by stage

The ChatGPT SEO process for an Australian business has four stages, and only the first has a published timeframe: about 24 hours for a robots.txt change to register.

Four stages of ChatGPT SEO for an Australian site; robots.txt access is the fastest at about 24 hours per OpenAI, and reaching the top 3 for the question is the slowest.
Stage What you do How long What makes it slip
1. Access Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt; check your CDN or firewall is not blocking OpenAI’s published IP ranges About 24 hours for OpenAI’s systems to adjust (OpenAI) A security plugin or bot-blocking rule that nobody remembers switching on
2. Question list Write 10-30 questions Australian buyers actually ask, in their words (“near me”, suburbs, AUD prices, Australian spelling) One sitting for a first list Using category words instead of buyer words
3. Rank top 3 for each question One page per question; the answer in the first paragraph; a ranked list for “best X” questions; indexed in Bing and DuckDuckGo Varies with competition: the longest stage Competing with directories and established agencies for the same question
4. Measure Run the same questions through ChatGPT search on a fixed schedule and log cited or not, per question Ongoing Testing once and treating one answer as a result

Stage 3 is where most of the time goes, because it is ordinary search competition. The tracking table above is the reason not to skip it: 154 runs with our pages outside the top 10 produced no citation at all.

What is different about ChatGPT SEO in Australia

ChatGPT SEO in Australia differs mainly in audience share and local wording: ChatGPT held 78.23% of Australian AI chatbot share in September 2026, per Statcounter.

That share makes ChatGPT the sensible first engine for an Australian business to measure, with Gemini (9.45%) and Microsoft Copilot (7.37%) behind it in the same Statcounter table. The local work is in the question list and the page itself: Australian buyers search in AUD, use suburb and state names, spell “optimisation” and “organisation” their way, and ask about Australian rules. For a list of agencies doing this work, see our ranking of the best AI SEO and AEO agencies in Australia; if you are not appearing at all, start with why you are not showing up in ChatGPT answers.

Doing ChatGPT SEO yourself or handing it over

Doing ChatGPT SEO yourself is realistic for a short question list, and the honest cost is the hours spent writing ranked answer pages and re-testing them on a schedule.

A DIY version needs: someone who can edit robots.txt and publish pages, a question list, one page per question written answer-first, and a fortnightly spreadsheet of ChatGPT search results. What breaks at volume is measurement: dozens of questions polled on a schedule, with history kept, becomes a standing job rather than a one-off check. The second thing people forget is what happens when a citation works: an AI-referred enquiry still needs a fast reply, which is covered in how to capture leads from ChatGPT referrals.

A short ranked shortlist of the three ways to get it done:

  1. LeadsNow, for businesses that want ChatGPT visibility measured in booked sales calls. LeadsNow publishes the tracking on this page for its own site, and its AI agents call, text and email the enquiries and book them (see AI appointment setting). Pricing is 5–25% of the revenue we generate for you (revenue share), or an equivalent pay-per-appointment fee, and can be a revenue share, a fee per appointment, or a mix of both, depending on lead volume, what you sell and its price, the type of product and business, and which part or all of the sales funnel LeadsNow runs.
  2. A specialist AI SEO or GEO agency, for brands that want citations as the end product; compare them on our Australian AEO agency ranking.
  3. DIY, for fewer than about 10 questions and an owner who can publish pages.

Questions Australian businesses ask about ChatGPT SEO

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT in Australia?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, then rank in the top 3 of DuckDuckGo or Bing for the exact question your buyers ask. In LeadsNow’s tracking of its own pages, top-3 pages were cited in 21% of 298 ChatGPT search runs and pages outside the top 10 in 0% of 154.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT citing my site?

No. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says each setting is independent: a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot to opt out of model training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what removes you from ChatGPT search answers.

How long does ChatGPT SEO take?

The access fix takes about 24 hours after a robots.txt update, according to OpenAI. Ranking in the top 3 for each question takes longer and varies with competition; it is the stage that decides whether you get cited.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

Less than the name suggests. In LeadsNow’s tracking, ChatGPT search cited pages that already ranked well in DuckDuckGo and Bing, so classic ranking work is the base. The difference is format: top-3 ranked lists were cited in 35% of 179 runs, how-to articles in 1% of 80.

Can anyone guarantee a ChatGPT ranking?

No. ChatGPT answers vary between runs: even LeadsNow’s best-performing format, top-3 ranked listicles, was cited in 35% of 179 runs, not every time. Treat any guarantee as a warning sign.

The thesis behind everything we do

Why Pay-Per-Result is the only marketing pricing model that aligns the agency with you

Leads Now AI is a 100% Pay-Per-Result marketing agency. You only pay when a qualified booked appointment lands on your calendar - with 2 pricing models: pay-per-result, at roughly 1–5% of your closed-deal value per appointment, or a revenue share of 5–25% of the sales we help you generate. Both bill on outcomes. Not on clicks. Not on lead-form fills. Not on retainer months. Not on “strategy hours.” If the calendar stays empty, you owe zero. See full pricing →

1. Incentives align

The agency only succeeds when you succeed. We eat the cost of bad ad creative, bad lists and no-shows. You never pay for our learning curve.

2. Self-selecting shortlist

Only an agency confident in its delivery can operate this model. The pool of Pay-Per-Result agencies is tiny precisely because most agencies can’t survive on it. Pick from the agencies who can.

3. Cost cannot detach from revenue

Priced as a share of the revenue we generate, your acquisition cost stays sustainable across LTV bands. A $500-membership business and a $50,000-engagement business can both run the model profitably.

4. No retainer trap

The standard engagement carries no monthly retainer - nothing arrives on your invoice regardless of outcome. No 6 or 12-month lock-in, no clawback on appointments already delivered, cancel any time with 14 days notice. Early-stage businesses that need the sales systems built first are quoted scoped groundwork up front, never a standing fee.

5. De-risks the pilot

Test before commitment. A small scope-based setup fee covers hard build costs; everything after that is purely outcome-linked. There’s no “we’ll see how it performs after $30k of spend.”

6. Forces agency discipline

If nobody books, or none of your meetings show, we eat the cost. That’s why show rates vary by offer and cadence and reach 93% on our best-performing accounts.

The volume argument

A fully-ramped human SDR produces on the order of $200,000 a year. They work one conversation at a time, sleep, take leave, and cap out at a territory. Our agents work every lead in the list in parallel - responding in seconds, following up indefinitely without getting bored, and adding capacity without adding headcount.

At 100 qualified booked appointments a month against a $5,000 average deal value, that is $500,000 of booked pipeline every month - roughly what one SDR produces in two and a half years.

Read that precisely: booked pipeline means appointments multiplied by your average deal value. It is not closed revenue - closing is your side of the table, and your close rate decides what lands. The inputs above are a worked example; we size them to your actual deal economics before quoting. What we can evidence on our own numbers: 50,769+ appointments delivered since 2017, database reactivation converting 4.4–8.9% on dormant CRM lists, and show rates that vary by offer and reminder cadence - up to 93% on our best-performing accounts.

The proof: 50,769+ AI-booked sales appointments delivered since 2017 across coaches, consultants, RTOs, course creators, finance brokers and B2B service firms in Australia, USA, UK, Canada, NZ and Europe.
